Is there any greater oxymoron in the English language than “honorable politician”? Because I’m finding it hard to think of two words that are more opposite in meaning.

Politics, as I learned very well during my 20 years is all about self-interest. It’s about power. Politicians may give you what you want, but only because they calculate that doing so will enable them, in the long run, to get what they want. If you can’t help them reach their personal goals, they aren’t interested in you (President Obama lack of interest in Black issues). And if they perceive that you are somehow in their way, watch out (Dr. Cornel West and Tavis Smiley). They will brush you aside like so much dandruff off their suit coats.

Honor, meanwhile, isn’t something that’s talked about much anymore. Instead, we focus on concepts like honesty, integrity, and ethics. Of course honor includes all of those, but it also contains something more: an element of self-effacement, of putting other people’s needs before one’s own, of helping those who aren’t in a position to help themselves simply because it’s the right thing to do.

Yet in our culture, not only do we rarely speak of honor, but we elevate the politician. We praise someone for his or her ability to “navigate the political waters,” forgetting that in doing so that person is merely pursuing his or her own self-interest, often at the expense of others.

The revelation of corruption by Congressman Cunningham comes on the heels of embarrassing indictments against Republican Congressman Tom Delay of Texas, serious questions about potential favors rewarded to Vice President Dick Cheney's Halliburton Company, and several other potential mud holes for an already tainted GOP.

Not that the Democrat Party has any room to gloat: the memory of watching only the second president in U.S. history impeached (Bill Clinton) is still fresh in most people's minds.

That corruption is rampant in Washington, D.C., surprises no one. What is surprising, at least to me, is how so many people, especially people calling themselves Christians or conservatives, seem so willing to tolerate it! It seems that the only time people get disgusted about corrupt politicians is when it is within the "other" party. Until they are disgraced, liberals only bemoan Republicans and conservatives only fault Democrats.

As long as the American people constantly reelect their individual congressmen, nothing will change in Washington, D.C. The longer politicians stay inside the Beltway, the more potential for corruption there is! So, why do we allow our elected representatives to become career-politicians? It's stupid!

LET US HOLD OUR REPRESENTATIVES ACCOUNTABLE, AND STOP ALLOWING THEM TO LIVE LAVISH LIVES , WHILE THEIR POLITICAL GAMES CONTRIBUTE TO OUR DEMISE.

lol!! That would be different!!!

One of the problems is the public has pretty much adopted the mindset of the politicians. It appears they we don't see the immoral and criminal elements of this whole process. I mean between Bush and Obama, how many deaths were cause on their watch? Perhaps millions upon millions but where's the outrage and the cry for justice. We act more like jealous spoil brats than a nation that had their country hijacked by criminals. I can only imagine what history will say, not about the politicians, but the citizens that sat on their hands while their government committed some of the greatest crimes against humanity that this Earth have ever seen.... INCREDIBLE!!!

You're batting a thousand Teresa Sanders, great post!

The citizens of this country is so engrossed with self-centeredness that they have allowed all the hype to cloud the bigger picture of what is really going on . Politicians and the shadow government, that calls the shots , have used all sorts of propaganda that has everyone confused . The truth is that this has been going on for so long that i honestly don't believe that there is no turning back. The colonist will do anything to keep what little power and privileges that they have.

Okay Gang, EVERYTHING in our lives is based on Politics or is political. From the first man/woman and tribal group (the starter culture on this planet) everything is political and revolves around it but there are very few people with the real gift and talent for : politics.!

Yes in some shape, form or fashion whther directly or indirectly our lives is based on politicas and the goal of native black federal nationalists of america (NBFNA) is that black Ameericans needs 2 things.

1. Political Autonomy

2. Economic Restitution (a.k.a. Reparations).

This is so we can build ourselves back from the bottom to the top and oversee the process from the top down to the bottom so that we can remake, reform and rebuild ourselves into the best and most powerful group of people that we can be mentally, spiritually, naturally and economically so we can be a power group of people in the greatest nation and material power on the planet earth.

(p.s. it has come time now to face the facts that we as "African-Americans, Coloureds, Negro" are not any of those but we are a native indigenous people here in this country with West African, West American Indian and even some Caucasian heritage and just like the Jews/Arabs, Cherokee, Sioux, Japanese, Chinese, Yoruba, Szulu and several others we are our own group of people here now.!

Yes we are our own tribal/socio-ethnic group of people and we should concentrate MORE on tribalism/ethnicity now rather than the races/religions mess and dilemma. Tribalism/Ethnicity UNITES a group of people permanently for good in all matters while your politics, religions, economics may change there would be no divisions or breakdowns in our overall unity.!!!
