The Way We Never Were: American Families and the Nostalgia Trap.

Host Marcia Alvar speaks with Stephanie Coontz, instructor at The Evergreen State College and author of "The Way We Never Were: American Families and the Nostalgia Trap." Ms. Coontz discusses how the family is a direct reflection of a culture, and the tradeoffs, both good and bad, made between the family of today and the family of the past. They also discuss how the reality of the family of the past has been clouded over by the nostalgia of the 1950's family sitcom, portraying different ideals and structures than were actually present at the time in America. 12/21/1993
